Wan'an said: “When the ancients entered the abbot's room, they first ordered the notice board hung. Each person, for the sake of the great matter of saṃsāra, came forward eagerly seeking determination and choice. Frequently nowadays, without asking whether one is old or sick, all are ordered to come and submit terms of surrender. If musk is present, it is naturally fragrant; why use public authority to drive them? Because of this, complications are falsely generated, and guest and host are both ill at ease. Masters of the Dharma should reflect on this.”
