3.71

萬菴曰。草堂弟子。惟山堂有古人之風。住黃龍日。知事公幹必具威儀。詣方丈受曲折。然後備茶湯禮。始終不易。有智恩上座。為母修冥福透下金二錢。兩日不尋。聖僧才侍者。因掃地而得之。掛拾遺牌。一眾方知。蓋主法者清淨。所以上行下效也（清泉集）。

Wan'an said: “Among Caotang's disciples, only Shantang possessed the style of the ancients. During his days residing at Huanglong, when administrators handled public affairs, they had to be fully equipped with deportment, proceeding to the abbot's quarters to receive instructions, and only then prepared tea and soup rituals, unchanging from beginning to end. There was Elder Zhien, who, in order to cultivate post-mortem merit for his mother, dropped two qian of gold and did not search for it for two days. Attendant Cai of the holy saṃgha found it while sweeping the floor and hung a ‘lost and found’ board, only then letting the whole assembly know. It is because the master of the Dharma was pure that those below followed the example of those above (Qingquan ji).”
