萬菴節儉以小參普說當供。衲子間有竊議者。萬菴聞之曰。朝饗膏梁暮厭麁糲。人之常情。汝等既念生死事大。而相求於寂寞之濱。當思道業未辦。去聖時遙。詎可朝夕事貪饕耶（真牧集）。

Wan'an was frugal, substituting small gatherings and general discourses for offerings of food. Some patch-robed monks whispered criticisms. When Wan'an heard of it, he said: ‘In the morning feasting on rich meats and in the evening disliking coarse grains is common human sentiment. Since you are mindful of the great matter of saṃsāra and seek one another on the desolate shores, you should consider that your work in the Way is not yet completed, and that the time of the sages is far distant. How could you devote yourselves morning and night to gluttony?’ (Zhenmu ji).”
