3.77

辯公曰。所謂長老者。代佛揚化。要在潔己。臨眾行事。當盡其誠。豈可擇利害自分其心。在我為之固當如是。若其成與不成。雖先聖不能必。吾何苟乎（月窟集）。

The venerable Bian said: 'Those called elders propagate transformation on behalf of the Buddha; the essential point lies in keeping oneself pure. In approaching the assembly and carrying out affairs, one must exert utmost sincerity. How could one calculate advantages and disadvantages and thereby divide one's own mind? What rests with me should certainly be done like this. As for whether it succeeds or fails, even the ancient sages could not be certain; why should I act with carelessness?' (Yueku Collection)
