4.15

月堂曰。黃龍居積翠。困病三月不出。真淨宵夜懇禱。以至然頂煉臂仰祈陰相。黃龍聞之責曰。生死固吾分也。爾參禪不達理若是。真淨從容對曰。叢林可無克文不可無和尚。識者謂。真淨敬師重法。其誠至此。他日必成大器（北山記聞）。

Yuetang said: "When Huanglong lived at Jicui, he was confined by illness for three months without coming out. Zhenjing made earnest prayers night and day, even burning his crown and searing his arm to look up and supplicate for unseen assistance. When Huanglong heard of this, he rebuked him, saying: 'Saṃsāra is indeed my lot. Are you so unpenetrating of principle in your study of Chan as this?' Zhenjing replied calmly: 'The monastic grove can do without Kewen, but it cannot do without the Master.' Those with discernment said: 'Zhenjing's reverence for his master and esteem for the Dharma reached such sincerity. He is certain to become a great vessel in the future.'" (Beishan jiwen)
