Jiantang was clear-minded, level, and straightforward, his benevolence and kindness extending to living beings. When monks had slight mistakes, he shielded, protected, and cherished them so as to bring their virtue to completion. He often said: 'Who among people has no faults? The beauty lies in reforming them.' During the days he resided at Guanshan in Poyang, it happened that in deep winter rain and snow fell continuously; though the thick congee did not sustain them, the master acted as if he neither heard nor saw it. Thus he had a praise that said: 'Covering my head with a patched quilt, burning stumps of wood, / I do not know that my body is in solitude.' Throughout his life he was content with the Way and was not in a hurry for honor and fame. On the day he accepted the invitation to Yuantong on Mount Lu, he carried only a staff and straw sandals. Those who saw him assumed a grave countenance and their minds were freed [from doubt]. The prefect of Jiujiang, Master Lin Shuda, looked upon him and said: 'This is a bridge in the Buddha's Dharma.' From this, his fame carried weight across the four quarters. His actions and retirements truly captured the style and demeanor of the predecessors. On the day of his death, even the errand-runners and laborers shed tears for him.
