Vice-minister Master Zhang Xiaoxiang sent a letter to Elder Yan of Fengqiao, which said: 'From the patriarchs of old, there was no such thing as being an abbot; opening the gates and accepting disciples was done out of unavoidable necessity. As the semblance Dharma declined and deteriorated, there even came to be talk of sealed bids, submitting petitions, and purchasing monasteries, just like the bustling chaos recently at Fengqiao—all of it is of this sort! The matter of your coming forth or retiring is fully known to everyone. The pecking from inside and tapping from outside occur simultaneously without originally exerting effort: when there are conditions, one stays; when conditions end, one immediately departs. If those peddling merchants wish to use this place to create hellish karma, it would be better to hand it over with both hands.' (Rock Inscription of Hanshan Temple).
