4.64

懶菴樞和尚曰。學道人當以悟為期。求真善知識決擇之。絲頭情見不盡。即是生死根本。情見盡處須究其盡之所以。如人長在家愁什麼家中事不辦。溈山云。今時人雖從緣得一念頓悟自理。猶有無始習氣未能頓盡。須教渠淨除現業流識。即是修也。不可別有行門令渠趣向。溈山古佛故能發此語。如或不然眼光落地時。未免手脚忙亂依舊如落湯螃蟹也。

Master Lan'an Shu said: "Students of the Way should make awakening their goal, and seek a true kalyāṇamitra to discern and resolve it. If emotional views are not exhausted down to the finest hair, that itself is the root of saṃsāra. Where emotional views are exhausted, one must examine the reason for their exhaustion. Just as one who always remains at home—what worry is there that the affairs of the household will not be settled? Guishan said: 'Although people nowadays may attain a single thought of sudden awakening to their own principle through conditions, they still have beginningless vāsanā that cannot be exhausted all at once. They must be taught to purify and eliminate the flowing consciousness of present karma—this itself is cultivation. There should not be another gate of practice causing them to incline toward it.' Guishan was an ancient buddha, so he was able to utter these words. If it were not so, then when the light of the eyes falls to the ground, they will inevitably flail their hands and feet in panic, just like a crab dropped into boiling water."
