Lan'an said: "The Vinaya states that there are four kinds of saṃgha property: first, fixed permanent property; second, permanent property of the saṃgha of the ten directions; third, property of the present saṃgha; and fourth, property of the present saṃgha from the ten directions. Furthermore, regarding permanent property, one must not violate it in the slightest; its offense is not light. It is not as if past and future sages have failed to give earnest instructions. Yet often those who hear it may not believe it, and those who believe it may not practice it. Whether going out or staying, this mountain monk has never failed to keep this earnestly in mind, still fearing that I might fall short. Therefore I composed a verse to admonish myself, saying:
The saṃgha property of the ten directions is as heavy as a mountain; / In myriad kalpas and a thousand lifetimes, how could it easily be repaid? / Though the golden mouth jointly spoke of it, they have never believed; / In another year, how will they escape the barrier of the iron city?
The human body is hard to obtain, so reflect well upon it; / When horns grow on one's head, the years and months will be long. / Ridiculous is coveting a single grain of another's rice, / Casually casting away half a year's provisions."
