Lan'an said: "The Nirvāṇa Sūtra says: 'If a person hears a single phrase or a single word of the Mahāparinirvāṇa explained, and does not form the sign of a word, does not form the sign of a phrase, does not form the sign of hearing, does not form the sign of a buddha, and does not form the sign of preaching—such meaning is called the sign of signlessness.' Great Master Bodhidharma came across the sea and did not establish written words because he wished to clarify the import of signlessness; it was not that Bodhidharma came up with a new idea on his own to establish a separate sect. Recent scholars do not awaken to this principle, and imagine that the Chan lineage is a separate Dharma gate. Those who take Chan as their lineage condemn the teachings; those who take the teachings as their lineage condemn Chan. Thus two schools of thought have formed, mutually slandering and clamouring without being able to stop themselves. Alas, for what they have heard to be as shallow and vulgar as this—if they are not foolish, they are mad. It is truly lamentable!" (Dharma Gate of the Mind Ground)
