Gao'an said: "The Way and virtue, benevolence and righteousness are not possessed solely by the ancients; contemporary people also possess them. But because their wisdom and understanding are not clear, their learning is not broad, their capacity is not pure, their aspirations are narrow and inferior, and their practice is not vigorous, they are consequently swayed by sights and sounds without noticing it themselves. This is because their habitual patterns of delusion and emotional thoughts have accumulated deeply and cannot be cast off abruptly. That is why they do not attain the stage of the ancients." (Yu Geng Longxue Shu)
