Mi'an said to Head Monk Wu, "In the monastic grove, only the people of Zhejiang are frivolous and weak, seldom standing firm. Your talents and capacity are vast and great, your forbearance is deep and accommodating, your aspirations and aims are upright and precise, and moreover your insight is steady and close. Your future cannot be easily foretold. Just conceal your light and do not display sharp corners; round your corners and harmonize like broken tiles, maintaining the middle way; do not bend yourself in the slightest for power and profit. This itself is to perform the Buddha's work without leaving the defilements of the world." (Letter to Xiao'an)
