Mi'an said, "My late teacher Ying'an once said: 'The worthy and the unworthy are opposites; one cannot but choose between them. The worthy uphold the Way, virtue, benevolence, and righteousness to establish themselves; the unworthy specialize in power, profit, deceit, and flattery to handle affairs. When the worthy attain their ambition, they will certainly practice what they have studied; when the unworthy occupy a position, they mostly indulge their selfish hearts, envying the worthy and being jealous of ability, indulging desires and craving wealth, shrinking from nothing. Therefore, when the worthy are obtained, the monastic grove flourishes; when the unworthy are employed, it falls into ruin. If there is one of these present, there certainly cannot be peace and quiet.'" (Seen in the letter to Venerable Yue)
