Having spoken these verses, I bow my head once more, taking refuge before all the Buddhas, Dharmas, and Saṅghas of the ten directions and the three times. Relying on the power of the Three Jewels, with sincere mind I make this aspiration to cultivate supreme bodhi: from this present life until the realization of right awakening, throughout the interim, I am resolved to strive diligently without retreating. Before attaining the Way, may my body be free from untimely illnesses, and my lifespan not meet premature death. When my correct life comes to an end, may I not see evil signs, be free from all terrors, and not give rise to inversions; may my body be free from bitter pain, my mind not scattered or confused, and my correct wisdom bright and clear. May I not pass through the intermediate existence (antarābhava), nor enter the hells, the beasts, or the hungry ghosts. May I never assume any of the manifold forms of those that travel by water, land, or air, the heavenly māras and non-Buddhists, or the dark ghosts and spirits. May I forever obtain a human body, intelligent, upright, and straightforward. May I not be born in an evil realm, nor meet an evil king; may I not be born in frontier lands, nor suffer poverty and hardship, nor become a slave or maidservant, nor take a female form, a eunuch's form, or two sex organs; may I not have yellow hair, black teeth, or be foolish, dim, and dull, ugly and deformed, blind, deaf, dumb, or mute. Whatever is repulsive, may I never be born as such. May I be born in a central land into a family of right faith. May I always obtain a male body with the six sense faculties intact and complete, upright, fragrant, and pure, free from all defilement and dirt. May my intentions be harmonious and elegant, my body tranquil and my mind quiet. Never greedy, angry, or deluded, may the three poisons be cut off forever; never committing various evils, may I always contemplate all goods. May I not act as a king's minister, nor carry out errands for him; not seeking glory and adornment, may I peacefully endure poverty to traverse the world. Having few desires and knowing contentment, may I not accumulate possessions; using clothing and food merely to sustain the body, may I not commit theft. May I not kill sentient beings, nor consume fish or meat. Loving and respecting sentient beings no differently from myself, may my nature and conduct be gentle and compliant; may I not look for others' faults, nor praise my own goodness. Free from contention with things, may I view enemy and friend as equal, not giving rise to discrimination, and not generating hatred or love. May I not covet others' things, nor begrudge my own wealth; not delighting in aggression, may I always harbor honesty and simplicity; may my mind not be rash or violent, and may I always delight in humility. May my mouth utter no evil speech, my body perform no evil action, and my mind be without flattery and deviousness. With the three karmas purified, may I abide in safety and ease in all places, free from all impediments and calamities: may I never undergo any hardships such as theft, highway robbery, royal law, imprisonment, cangues, floggings, chains and shackles, swords, spears, arrows, lances, ferocious beasts, poisonous insects, falling from peaks, drowning in water, burning by fire, drifting in the wind, fright from thunder and lightning, breaking trees, collapsing cliffs, falling halls, rotting roof beams, beatings, terrors, pursuits, surrounds, seizures, bindings, false accusations, slanders, or unexpected warrants and summons. Evil ghosts, sudden disasters, pestilences, malignant epidemics, evil māras, and demons of the river or sea, towering crags and loftiest peaks, and dwelling tree-spirits—may all such divine spirits who hear my name or see my form generate the bodhi-mind, protect and cover me completely, and not harass or harm me. May I be safe and at ease day and night, free from all fear and trembling. May my four elements be healthy and strong, and my six sense faculties pure and clear; unstained by the six sense dusts, may my mind be free from disordered thoughts; without dullness and stagnation, may I never give rise to nihilistic views; not clinging to emptiness or existence, may I remain far detached from all signs. Faithfully venerating the Benevolent Capable One, may I not cling to my own views; with bright and clear understanding, may I practice and train life after life; with firm and solid correct wisdom, may I not be ensnared by Māra. When my great life ends, may I be peaceful and joyful; in relinquishing this body and receiving a body, may there be no enmity or opposition. May all sentient beings be my good friends. Wherever I am born, may I encounter the Buddha and hear the Dharma; having gone forth from home in childhood purity, may I live in harmony as a saṅgha member. May the garments of every body not depart from the kāṣāya; may the utensils of every meal not deviate from the bowl. With the mind of the Way firm and solid, may I not give rise to arrogance. Reverently respecting the Three Jewels, may I constantly cultivate the brahma-conduct. Drawing close to luminous teachers, following good spiritual friends, having deep faith in the correct Dharma, and diligently practicing the six perfections; reciting the Mahāyāna, walking the Way, making prostrations, offering wondrous tastes, incense, flowers, and chants of praise; with lamps and candles, terraced towers, mountains, seas, forests, and springs—whatever exists in the air, on level ground, or in between, even up from a fine dust mote, may I offer all of it, gathering merit to dedicate it toward bodhi. Contemplating the definitive meaning, may my aspiration delight in quietude; pure, simple, and silent, may I not love clamor and disturbance; not delighting in crowd-dwelling, may I always favor solitary abodes; seeking nothing at all, may I concentrate my mind on samādhi and prajñā. Fully endowed with the six supernatural knowledges, may I transform and liberate sentient beings; according with whatever the mind wishes, may I be unimpeded and free. Accomplishing the myriad practices with boundless refinement and subtlety, upright, round, and luminous, may my aspiration achieve the Buddha Way. / May these roots of goodness / spread universally to the realms of the ten directions, / reaching upward to the summit of existence, / and downward to the wind-wheel, / to all bodies in heaven, the human realm, and the six destinies, / to all sentient beings. / All the merit I possess, / I share completely with sentient beings, / exhausting dust-mote kalpas, / not excluding a single being. / According to whatever roots of goodness I have, / may they universally enrich and adorn all. / To the suffering and afflicted in the hells: / Namo Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha! Reciting the names of the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha, / may they all receive liberation. / To the suffering and afflicted among the hungry ghosts: / Namo Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha! Reciting the names of the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha, / may they all receive liberation. / To the suffering and afflicted among the animals: / Namo Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha! Reciting the names of the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha, / may they all receive liberation. / To gods, humans, and asuras, / and the Ganges-sands of sentient beings / pressed and tortured by the eight sufferings: / Namo Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha! / Through these roots of goodness of mine, may they universally be spared all entanglements. / Namo to the Buddhas of the three times! / Namo to the sūtras, bodhisattvas, and the saṅgha of śrāvakas, / the holy multitudes numerous as dust motes! / Without abandoning your original compassion, / gather in and receive the varieties of living beings. / May all sentient beings throughout space / take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha, / leave suffering and exit the three paths of misery, / swiftly transcending the three realms. / May each give rise to the bodhi-mind, / day and night practicing prajñā, / life after life diligent and energetic, / always as if extinguishing fire on their heads. / When first attaining bodhi, / I vow that we will deliver one another. / When I walk the Way and make prostrations, / when I chant sūtras and recite the Buddha's name, / when I cultivate śīla, samādhi, and prajñā: / Namo Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha! / I universally vow that all sentient beings / will completely accomplish the Buddha Way. / We and all sentient beings, / firmly seeking bodhi, / prostrate ourselves to the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha: / may we swiftly achieve right awakening!
