晦堂心禪師。自言初入道。自恃甚易。逮見黃龍先師。退思日用與理矛盾極多。遂力行之。三年祈寒溽暑。確志不移。方得事事如理。而今欬唾掉臂。也是祖師西來意。

Chan Master Huitang Xin said of himself: 'When I first entered the Way, I presumed it to be very easy. But when I met my late master Huanglong and retreated to examine myself, I found that my daily activities conflicted tremendously with the principle. I then practiced strenuously. Through bitter cold and damp heat for three years, my firm resolve never wavered. Only then was every single matter brought into accord with the principle. Nowadays, even coughing, spitting, or swinging my arms is nothing other than the meaning of the ancestral teacher's coming from the West.'
