Chan Master Dufeng Benshan entered seclusion at Yuxi. He did not set up a bed, but placed only a single stool, taking awakening as his sole standard. One night, falling into a drowsy slumber, he did not realize it was already midnight; thereupon he removed the stool, walking and standing day and night. Leaning against a wall, he fell asleep again, so he vowed never to come near a wall and walked in the open space. His physical strength exhausted, the demon of sleep grew even heavier; weeping aloud before the Buddha, he pressed himself with a hundred devices. Thereupon his practice made daily progress. Hearing the sound of a bell, he was suddenly swept beyond self-control, and demonstrated it with a verse: / 'Deep, silent, and still, all contrivance cut off; / Touched unexpectedly, it roars like thunder. / An earth-shaking sound brings all reports to an end; / The skull shatters to powder, and from the dream one first awakes.'
