Chan Master Duchi, taboo name Jishan, was a native of Fengyang. His father was surnamed Wu, and his mother was Lady Cheng. At the age of seventeen, he left home. At first, he met Venerable Yuanming to seek instruction and received the gongan of "Wu" (No). He shut himself in seclusion without setting up a sleeping couch. When the demon of sleep grew heavy, he used a hundred stratagems to banish it. One morning, upon hearing the sound of a bell, he suddenly uttered a verse, saying: / "Profoundly still and silent, all deliberate action ceased; / When brushed against for no reason, it roars like thunder. / With an earth-shaking crash, every vestige of news is gone; / The skull is smashed to powder as the dream first ends." / The master had recorded sayings circulating in the world.
