The above two works, comprising three fascicles in total, [were translated by] the upāsaka and Cavalry Commandant An Xuan of the Parthian kingdom (Arsacid Empire). In the late reign of Emperor Ling, he traveled as a merchant to Luoyang, and meeting Yan Fotiao, collaborated with him on the translation. People of the era also called him the Marquis An, the Cavalry Commandant. That Sengyou calls him Shigao is simply a confusion arising from their sharing the same surname. Shigao was the crown prince of that kingdom and due to inherit the throne, so he ceded it; Xuan's official title was Marquis. Based directly on the titles of the sūtras, this is clearly verifiable; it was only due to a lack of careful investigation that they were conflated.
