In his mind he aspired to the Pure Land, and throughout his life he never sat with his back to the west. The surveillance commissioner Yang Jie of Wuwei composed thirty stanzas of Hymns on the Land of Peace and Bliss to praise him. One of them says: “The Pure Land pervades worlds [as numerous as] sands; / Why labor only to point to the west? / If one can but enter through unity, / Every place is bodhi.” The Master wished to broadly transform the worldly, and so at his tonsure temple, Jingzhu Monastery, he painted the nine grades and three ranks, carving those hymns into stone. Those who viewed them were all moved and transformed. One day, free of illness, he passed away sitting cross-legged. There were auspicious portents of heavenly music resounding in the sky and strange fragrances filling the room.
