范甯。字武子。篤學多所通覽。時浮虛相扇。儒雅日替。甯以其源始於王弼何晏二人之罪深於桀紂。乃著論非之。累遷中書侍郎。朝廷疑議輒諮訪之。出補豫章太守。大設庠序起學臺。功用彌廣。刺史王凝之上言抵罪。免官歸家。遠公招之入社。而甯竟不能往。

Fan Ning, styled Wuzi: He was deeply dedicated to learning and extensively knowledgeable. In those days, superficial vanity was stirred up, and classical elegance was in daily decline. Fan Ning considered that the source of this began with Wang Bi and He Yan, whose offenses exceeded those of Jie and Zhou. He thereupon composed an essay refuting them. Promoted step by step, he became a Palace Attendant of the Secretariat, and whenever the court encountered doubtful deliberations, they consulted him. He was sent out to serve as Administrator of Yuzhang, where he widely established academies and set up study platforms, their benefits becoming immensely broad. The Inspector Wang Ningzhi memorialized against him, citing offenses, so he was dismissed from office and returned home. Master Huiyuan invited him to join the society, but Ning was ultimately unable to go.
