Yuanzhao was of the Lu clan of Siming, from the family of the writer Lu Dian. In his early years, he studied the Vinaya and read the Canon, reciting the Lotus Sūtra ten thousand times. He also pricked his blood to write one set of the Lotus Sūtra and three sets of commentaries of the Vinaya school. In the fourth year of the Jianyan era, the Jurchen barbarians overran Siming; the Master was then residing at Huxin. The barbarians forced him to travel north; when he reached Nanxu, he said to those around him: "I am about to return to the West." Immediately, the sound of reed-pipes and singing was heard, and at once the soldiers and civilians all saw the Master looking west, chanting the Buddha's name, and passing away.
