道琛號圓辯。為南湖八世祖。於彌陀懺宴坐中見法智尊者。於法華懺中見普賢放光。每月二十三日建淨業會以為常課。道俗俱至。一日示疾。願平日一豪之善回向淨土。集眾諷觀經不絕七日。謂首座曰。吾已見佛身聞異香。乃沐浴更衣書偈曰。唯心淨土本無迷悟。一念不生即入初住。復令諷安樂行。至深入禪定見十方佛。嗒然而化。

Daochen, styled Yuanbian, was the eighth patriarch of Nanhu. In meditation during the Amitābha repentance, he saw the Venerable Fazhi; during the Lotus repentance, he saw Samantabhadra emitting light. On the twenty-third day of every month, he established a pure karma gathering as a regular practice, attended by both clergy and laity. One day he manifested illness, vowing to dedicate every strand of his lifetime's good roots to the Pure Land. He gathered the assembly to chant the Contemplation Sūtra without ceasing for seven days. He said to the head monk: "I have already seen the Buddha's body and smelled a wondrous fragrance." He then bathed, changed his clothes, and wrote a verse: "The Pure Land of Mind-Only fundamentally has no delusion or awakening; / When not a single thought arises, one immediately enters the First Abode." He again ordered them to recite the 'Peaceful and Joyful Practices' [chapter], and when they reached "deeply entering meditative concentration and seeing the Buddhas of the ten directions," he passed away in silent serenity.
