Zhitong was a native of Hedong during the Sui. He constantly recited thirty verses of praise to the Buddha composed by past sages. During each of the six periods of the day, he raised his voice to sing them before the statue; the closing tune was poignant, moving those who heard it to sorrow. In the seventh year of the Daye reign era, while chanting the Buddha's name in unison with his disciple Dinggai, he suddenly saw extraordinary radiant light, jeweled banners, and floral canopies. He said to Gai, “My rebirth in the Pure Land is set for tonight.” He then passed away seated in the hall of repentance. The assembly saw a thousand tiers of multistoried pavilions clearing through the sky and moving away, just like clouds and mist.
