27.49

智琰。居武丘。集僧俗修淨業觀想。每月一集五百餘人。後於病中見梵僧手執寶瓶。前謂之曰。吾無邊光也。却後淨土所稱功德寶王乃我爾。琰與寺眾論曰。無邊光勢至大士。功德寶王其成佛之號也。我其西歸乎。其夕竟亡。

Zhiyan resided at Mount Huqiu. He gathered monastics and laypeople to cultivate pure karma and contemplation, with more than five hundred people meeting once a month. Later, while ill, he saw an Indian monk holding a jeweled vase in his hand, who approached and said to him, “I am Boundless Light; in the future, the one called the Jewel King of Merits in the Pure Land will be none other than me.” Yan discussed this with the temple assembly, saying, “Boundless Light is the Great Being Mahāsthāmaprāpta; 'Jewel King of Merits' is his title upon attaining Buddhahood. Am I to return to the West?” That night, he passed away.
