Yingke received ordination at Yaoshan in Zhachuan. He studied widely among doctrinal lectures and Chan gates. Due to illness, he returned to his place of ordination. He indulged in wine and roasted meat without restraint. Secretly reflecting that he was deficient in moral discipline and feared falling into transmigration, he had a fellow dweller fetch the Jingtu wangsheng zhuan (Biographies of Rebirth in the Pure Land) compiled by Master Jiezhu, and read it facing his bed. Every time he read a biography, he nodded in assent. Soon after, he chose a room, set up a meditation chair facing west, and fasted while recollecting the Buddha for three days. In a dream, the Buddha and the Great Being said to him: "You still have ten years of lifespan remaining; you should encourage yourself for now." Ke addressed the Buddha: "Even if one has a hundred years, in this defiled and evil Jambudvīpa it is easy to lose right mindfulness. My wish is to ascend early to the Land of Peace and Nurture to serve the holy ones." The Buddha said: "Since your resolve is thus, I shall come to welcome you after three days." When the time arrived, he had the assembly recite the Amitābha Sūtra. The master said: "The Buddha and the great assembly have all arrived." Thereupon he peacefully passed away.
