27.97

宗本。初參天衣懷禪師有契悟。後住淨慈。奉詔入住東京慧林。召對延和殿。密修淨土之業。臨終安坐而逝。雷峯才法師。神遊淨土見一殿殊麗。人曰。以待淨慈本禪師。又資福羲師。至慧林禮足施金而去。人詰之。答曰。吾定中見金蓮華。人言以俟慧林本禪師。又小蓮華無數。稱是以待受度人。或有萎者。云是退墮之人也。

Zongben initially studied under Chan Master Huai of Tianyi and had an awakening. Later he resided at Jingci. By imperial decree, he was appointed abbot of Huilin in the Eastern Capital and summoned for an audience at the Yanhe Hall. He secretly cultivated Pure Land practices. As his end approached, he sat peacefully and passed away. Dharma Master Cai of Leifeng spiritually journeyed to the Pure Land and saw an exceptionally magnificent hall; someone told him: "This is reserved for Chan Master Ben of Jingci." Furthermore, Master Xi of Zifu went to Huilin, paid homage at his feet, donated gold, and departed. When questioned, he answered: "In samādhi I saw a golden lotus; someone said it was awaiting Chan Master Ben of Huilin. There were also countless small lotuses, said to await those who receive deliverance; some were withering, which were said to belong to those who backslide."
