A man surnamed Jing of Chang'an was originally a butcher. Because the Upādhyāya Shandao urged people to recite the Buddha's name, the entire city ceased eating meat. Jing grew envious and resentful; wielding a knife, he entered the monastery with intent to kill. Shandao pointed to the West and manifested the appearance of the Pure Land. Jing immediately turned his mind and made a vow, climbed a tall tree to recite the Buddha's name, and fell from the tree to his death. The crowd saw a transformed Buddha leading a heavenly youth emerging from his crown. (The heavenly youth was his consciousness-spirit.)
