Zhang Zhongkui of Chang'an made his living by slaughtering chickens. At the end of his life, he saw a person dressed in crimson driving a flock of chickens toward him, crying out: 'Peck! Peck!' Thereupon, from all four directions, they pecked up at his two eyes; the blood flowed, and the pain was unbearable. There was a monk named Hongdao who saw this, set up an image for him, and urged him to recite the Buddha's name. Suddenly, a fragrant odor filled the room, the flock of chickens dispersed, and he sat upright and passed away.
