Wu Qiong lived in Renhe. He had previously been a monk, but due to family affairs, he returned to lay life, married twice, and fathered two sons. Butcher, vintner, cook, and carver—there was nothing he did not do. When preparing food and slaughtering chickens and ducks, he would lift them up by hand and chant: 'Children of Amitābha Buddha, be free of this body!' Every time he cut meat, his mouth constantly recited the Buddha's name, and he also taught villagers to recite sūtras and practice repentance. Suddenly, a tumor as large as a chicken egg grew upon his eye. Always deeply terrified, he built a grass hermitage to live alone, tying his thoughts day and night [to the Buddha] and repenting with open confession according to the Practice of Samantabhadra. One day, without illness, he went to various families to bid farewell, saying: 'Tomorrow I shall depart.' The next day, he invited fellow practitioners of the Way to assist him in reciting the Buddha's name. He traded his cloth robe for wine, and after drinking, shouted loudly: 'The Buddha has come!' Then he passed away.
