Yan Bangrong was a native of Chizhou. Because a monk urged him to cultivate [the practice for] the Western [Pure Land], he recited the Dhāraṇī for Assured Rebirth [in the Pure Land], facing west every morning and chanting it a thousand times, or leading the congregation in reciting it together. He did this for twenty years. In the spring of the first year of the Shaoxi era, he happened to smell an extraordinary fragrance that did not disperse for consecutive days. At night, his family dreamt of two green-clad attendants standing by Bangrong's side. His son also dreamt that Amitābha emitted light that shone all through the hall, turning everything into a golden colour. For several days, he sat cross-legged facing west and recited the Buddha's name. Suddenly he rose and said, "I am going!" He walked several steps, extended his hands, formed a mudrā, and passed away standing with a smile.
