The practitioner of Buddha-recitation Lady Chen was the mother of Chan Master Ze. When the Master resided at Puhui in Guangping, he welcomed and served her in the eastern chamber of the Abbot's quarters. She had her hair shorn into the appearance of a monastic, and recited the Buddha's name morning and night; the fourfold assembly called her 'the Practitioner.' Later, while ill, she gathered monastics and laypeople to strike the chime and recite the Buddha's name. After two days, she suddenly joined her palms, gazed upon the image, and placidly passed away. The next day, the crown of her head was warm and her facial complexion was fresh and fair. The day before, the Master had dreamt that his mother said to him, 'I see more than ten nuns coming to summon me.' The Master had replied, 'This is an auspicious sign of rebirth.' Having spoken, she sat and entered extinction, her facial complexion turning white. When the time came, it was indeed so.
