At the first assembly in the Deer Park, the many disciples were not yet pure, and for this reason the various precepts were gradually instituted to purify the three karmas. Having repeatedly been rebuked, and subsequently having heard extensively the opening and revealing, those in the world pursuing learning would be prone to the fault of being eager for the vehicle while being lax regarding the precepts. Therefore, on the night of parinirvāṇa, [the Buddha] supported the Vinaya and spoke of the eternal, strictly admonishing future capacities not to neglect studying the precepts. This is supporting and upholding the Vinaya deportment with a mind that knows the eternal; it is not the same as the one-sided propagation of the Tripiṭaka's teachings during the twelve years. Only Master Nanshan remotely received the Buddha's entrustment, exclusively taking charge of the Vinaya, copiously expounding its clauses and regulations, and deeply illuminating adherence and violation, precisely answering the needs of the capacities in the degenerate age. How could those who enter the Way not proceed from this? The three learnings follow one another, and this is the first step. Composed: Treatise on Nanshan Vinaya Studies.
