Horizontal coverage of the Secret [Teaching]: The Qian says: 'The horizontal coverage of the secret is omnipresent at all times' (and so on). How could there be secrecy in the Lotus Sūtra? One must understand that when discussed vertically, manifest teaching exists across the four periods, yet there remains the division between the Great and Small [Vehicles] of the Avataṃsaka and the Deer Park. But when discussed horizontally, secret concealment and manifestation depend on capacity and are omnipresent at all times—omnipresent throughout the previous four periods, not omnipresent in the Lotus period. Furthermore, the Qian says: 'In the five flavors, a single path progresses vertically, each possessing the partial and the complete, the secret and the indeterminate.' This explains the Xuan text's refutation of the southern masters who only used the five flavors (obtaining only the expedient means), and the northern masters who exclusively used the partial and the complete (obtaining only the real). Our school uses the five flavors to complete the partial and the complete, and the partial and the complete to complete the five flavors; hence it says that every flavor possesses the partial and the complete, the secret and the indeterminate. This complementary explanation is provisionally so, but it does not mean that the previous four flavors of secret and indeterminate are found within the Lotus Sūtra. Therefore, the Xuan text says: 'The expedient and the real travel together like the two wings of a bird. Although they travel together (both using the five flavors and the partial and complete), their emergence and concealment find their proper places' (the five flavors and the partial and complete complementing each other is called 'emergence,' meaning complementing the complete letter of the Lotus clarified butter; pervading only the partial and complete of the four flavors is called 'concealment,' meaning not reaching the complete letter of the Lotus clarified butter).
