33.13

身燈　佛言。我昔於閻浮提作國王。剜身出肉深如大錢。以蘇油灌中作千燈炷。語婆羅門。請說經法。求無上道（菩薩本行經）菩薩為法因緣剜身為燈（涅槃經）。

Body Lamps: The Buddha said: 'Long ago in Jambudvīpa, I was a king. I gouged my flesh to a depth resembling a large coin, filled it with ghee, and made a thousand lamp wicks. I said to a brāhmaṇa, "Please speak the scriptures and the Dharma, as I seek the unsurpassed Way"' (from the *Sūtra of the Bodhisattva's Former Deeds*). A bodhisattva, for the sake of the causes and conditions of the Dharma, gouged his body to make lamps (from the *Nirvāṇa Sūtra*).
