4. Expedients to Redeem Transgressions. The Śūraṅgama Sūtra states: 'When upholding this dhāraṇī, all offenses of violating the precepts, regardless of gravity, are extinguished at once; even if one has consumed wine or eaten the five pungents, the Buddhas, bodhisattvas, devas, and immortals will not regard it as a transgression.' The Avalokiteśvara Dhāraṇī Sūtra gives the Consecration Mudrā and Spell: 'Bend the two thumbs into the palms, grasp the ring fingers, with the backs of the ring fingers facing each other; join the tips of the two little fingers; stand the two middle fingers straight with their tips joined; bend the two index fingers, each pressing onto the back of a middle finger. The mantra goes: oṃ bhūḥ saṃsmara somyāya svāhā. Recite it twenty-one times and consecrate one's own crown. Every morning, form the mudrā and recite it over a basin. If one who upholds the mantra commits violations of desire or consumes the five pungents, recite this mantra to dissolve it,' and so forth. These two methods of incantation are prepared for accidental offenses. If one relies upon such arts to repeatedly transgress and repeatedly undo them, one merely magnifies the sin of desecrating the Dharma; the spirit kings of the mantra division will instead conceive wrath and reproach, which will serve precisely to hasten the retribution of the Avīci Hell. How could one not be cautious!
