3. Allowance for Sickness in the Hīnayāna. The Baoying jing states: 'The seven assemblies may not consume meat, foul items, or pungents. An allowance is made for sickness: one stays outside the saṅghārāma in a layperson's house; having taken it for the full duration of forty-nine days, one bathes in fragrant water, and only then may one recite without committing an offense.' The Samyuktāgama states: 'A person who eats the five pungents defiles the Three Jewels; upon death, he falls into the Excrement and Dung Hell, and emerging, he becomes a wild fox, pig, or dog; if he attains human form, his body is fishy and reeking.' The Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya allows a sick bhikṣu to consume garlic, permitting him to stay in a small room to one side for seven days; he may not lie on the monastic bedding, nor enter the lecture hall or the latrines; he may not eat among the saṅgha, nor approach the Buddha to bow, but may bow from afar downwind; when seven days are completed, he bathes and perfumes his robes, and only then may he rejoin the assembly.'
