34.46

述曰。佛道幽遠非可約說。茲但為導吾宗之初學與夫搢紳先生之欲知此道者耳。年少氣盛疾讀此書。文雖無壅義則未解。有能用此約說推尋佛紀四卷之文。以未解義質之沙門之知教者。字字研詳倏烏見理。欲不之悟未之有也。

The author remarks: The Buddha's Way is profound and far-reaching, not something that can be epitomized. This work merely serves to guide the beginners of our school and those gentry gentlemen who desire to know this Way. When one is young and full of vigor, reading this book hurriedly, though the text presents no obstruction, its meaning remains uncomprehended. If one can use this concise exposition to investigate the texts of the four fascicles of the Basic Annals of the Buddha, and query monks who understand the teachings concerning the uncomprehended meanings, scrutinizing word by word, the principle will suddenly become clear. For one wishing not to awaken to it—such a thing has never occurred.
