The Narrator says: The Han followed the Qin in taking the tenth month, the establishment of the Hai branch, as the first month of the year. Even during the prosperity of Emperor Wen and Emperor Jing, this could not be changed. Taking the first month, the establishment of the Yin branch, employs the Xia calendar. What Confucius referred to as 'following the seasons of the Xia' could only be implemented when Emperor Wu of the Han arrived. The character *zheng* (正) is pronounced with the departing tone (*zhèng*); the old pronunciation was the level tone (*zhēng*), which is no longer used today. In the *Classic of Documents*, 'carelessly casting aside the three calendar arrangements,' in the *Classic of Poetry*, 'in the first month,' in the *Zuo tradition*, 'in the spring, the king's first month,' and in the *Book of Han*, 'revising the calendar and the first day of the month'—none of these have phonetic glosses. In the *Classic of Documents*, 'on the first day of the first month,' it is glossed with the pronunciation *zhēng* and also read according to the regular pronunciation. This was probably because Lu Deming complied with antiquity and avoided the taboo name of the First Emperor of Qin, thus pronouncing it *zhēng* down to the present day. People among the commoners still make the *zhēng* sound, utterly unaware that, being far removed from the Qin, it ought naturally to be discarded. Today, people still do not know how to observe the taboo name of Sage Confucius. How could one read his books and practice his teachings yet not know how to observe his taboo? This is something that Confucian scholars and gentlemen should present to the court to be enacted into law, which would be proper.
