In the second year, Dongfang Shuo, a native of Qi, served as Grand Palace Grandee. The Emperor was fond of the arts of transcendence. Shuo obtained the Wind-Resonating Tree from the state of Xina, and the Emperor bestowed it broadly upon all his ministers; if a person fell ill it would sweat, and if they died it would snap. Furthermore, travelling east to the Marsh of Auspicious Clouds, he obtained five-coloured sweet dew (amṛta). The Emperor bestowed it broadly upon all his ministers to ingest; the elderly grew youthful and the sick were healed. In his youth, Shuo wandered the Marsh of Primordial Chaos and encountered an old mother picking mulberries. There was an old man with yellow eyebrows who pointed to the mother and said to Shuo, 'Formerly she was my wife, who took form from the essence of the Grand White [Venus]. Now you too are the essence of this star. I have abstained from grain and swallowed qi for over nine thousand years. Every three thousand years I return my bones and wash my marrow; every two thousand years I shed my skin and renew my hair. Since my birth, I have already washed my marrow three times and renewed my hair five times' (from the *Dongming ji* and the *Biography of Dongfang Shuo*).
