Earlier, Zhang Jue of Julu served Huang-Lao and taught with occult arts, calling it the Taiping Dao. He chanted over talisman water to cure illnesses, ordering the sick to kneel, prostrate, and confess their transgressions. Sometimes their illnesses were healed, and the multitude collectively regarded him as divine. Jue dispatched his disciples in all directions to deceive and entice people one after another. In over ten years, his followers numbered several hundred thousand; from the eight provinces of Qing, Xu, You, Ji, Jing, Yang, Yan, and Yu, there was none who did not respond. In all, there were thirty-six divisions (fang); a division was like a general. A large division had over ten thousand people; a small division had six or seven thousand. Jue's disciple Tang Zhou submitted a memorial exposing him, and an edict was issued to hunt down and arrest Jue and the others. Jue ordered all the divisions to rise up together, all wearing yellow turbans as their insignia. Therefore, the people of the time called them the Yellow Turban Bandits. Within ten days to a month, the realm responded in resonance (Jue rose in the first year of the Zhongping reign period of Emperor Ling). An edict ordered Huangfu Song to suppress Jue. Song battled Jue's younger brother Liang, greatly defeated him, and beheaded Liang. Jue had already died of illness earlier; they opened his coffin and mutilated the corpse, sending his head to the capital (Hou Han shu, 'Biography of Huangfu Song').
