Zhang Lu's grandfather, Ling, sojourned in Shu and studied the Dao at Mount Heming. He fabricated Daoist texts to mislead the common people. Those who received the Dao contributed five pecks of rice, so the world called them 'Rice Bandits'. When Ling died, his son Heng transmitted his trade. When Heng died, Lu transmitted it in turn (Sanguo zhi, 'Records of Wei').
