三十九年（哀公十四年）魯哀公西狩獲麟（仁獸一角）。孔子傷麟之出非其時。遂絕筆於春秋。

In the thirty-ninth year (the fourteenth year of Duke Ai), Duke Ai of Lu hunted in the west and captured a lin (a benevolent beast with a single horn). Confucius grieved that the lin had appeared out of its proper time, and thereupon laid down his brush on the Spring and Autumn Annals.
