In the twelfth year, the kingdom of Jāvā sent tribute, presenting a memorial that said: 'Great Sovereign of the Song state, Great Auspicious Son of Heaven, who teaches and transforms all beings, subdues the four māras, turns the venerated wheel of the Dharma, and liberates sentient beings: even we who are far away are moistened by your spiritual grace.'
Vinaya Master Huixun was well-versed in the Mahāsāṃghika and Daśabhāṇavāra Vinayas; he composed commentaries to expound them. This was the beginning of commenting on the Daśabhāṇavāra Vinaya.
An imperial order appointed the nun Baoxian as the Rectifier of Nuns for the capital.
The Emperor said to the Palace Attendant He Shangzhi: 'Fan Tai and Xie Lingyun often said that the Six Classics are fundamentally for aiding worldly affairs, but if one seeks the true essentials of spiritual nature, one must take Buddhist principles as a guide. Recently I read Yan Yanzhi's "Refutation of the Treatise on Penetrating Nature" and Zong Bing's "Objection to the Treatise on the White and the Black" (both found in the Hongming ji); both clearly fathom the ultimate principle and enlighten and stimulate people's minds. If the entire realm were pure in this transformation, I could bring about great peace without stirring.'
Shangzhi said: 'Ever since the crossing of the Yangtze River, Wang Dao, Zhou Yi, Yu Liang, Xie An, Dai Kui, Xu Xun, and my great-grandfather and his brothers (the brothers of He Chong) have all respectfully submitted their wills and taken refuge. If a person can perform one good deed, then one evil deed is eliminated. When one evil deed is eliminated, one punishment is halted. When one punishment is halted in a family, ten thousand punishments are halted in the state. This is what Your Majesty's brilliant decree calls bringing about great peace without stirring. Therefore, when Fotudeng went to Zhao, the two Shi rulers decreased their cruelty; when the spiritual stūpa radiated light, Fu Jian lessened his tyranny. That the spiritual path assists transformation is brilliantly manifest and observable. As for the undertakings of earth and timber, though they may seem wasteful, the planting of blessings and requital of kindness cannot be abruptly terminated.'
Shangzhi further said: 'Honouring hermits brings rest to warriors; prizing benevolence and virtue dissolves warlike spirit. If one takes Sunzi and Wuzi as one's aim and always anticipates annexation, then one will have nothing to take from the Way of Yao and Shun—how could this be limited to the teachings of Śākya alone?'
The Emperor was pleased and said: 'The Buddhist order's having you is like the Confucian school's having Jilu: what is called "evil words do not enter the ears".'
