In the twenty-seventh year, Wang Xuanmo breached military discipline during a northern expedition. Xiao Bin wished to execute him. Shen Qingzhi remonstrated, saying: 'Foli's (the childhood name of Emperor Shizu of Wei) might shakes the empire; how could Xuanmo have resisted him? Killing a fighting general would only weaken ourselves.' He then stopped. Earlier, when Xuanmo was about to be executed, he dreamed of a person telling him: 'If you recite the Avalokiteśvara Sūtra a thousand times, you can escape [death].' The person then orally taught him the sūtra, saying: 'Avalokiteśvara, homage to the Buddha! There is a cause with the Buddha; there is a condition with the Buddha. Mutually conditioned by the Buddha and Dharma: permanence, bliss, self, and purity. In the morning recite Avalokiteśvara, in the evening recite Avalokiteśvara. Thought after thought arises from the mind; thought after thought does not depart from the mind.' After waking, he recited it unceasingly; suddenly an order was shouted to halt the execution. Later, his official rank reached Commander of the Opening of the Office, and he lived to eighty-two.
