Emperor Xiaowu (Jun, son of Emperor Wen) ordered the śramaṇa Huiqu to be the Grand Karmadāna for the capital.
On the death anniversary of Emperor Wen, His Majesty established the Eight-Precept Retreat at Zhongxing Temple. When the midday meal was finished, accompanying officials such as Yuan Minsun again presented fish and meat. The Emperor was enraged and dismissed them all from office.
He summoned the śramaṇa Daoyou into the inner palace to preach the Dharma. His Majesty praised him and ordered him to be the abbot of Xin'an Temple.
Śramaṇa Sengyu of Wuxing initially established Zhaoti Temple at Mount Lu and constantly recited the Lotus Sūtra. In the sixth month of this year, he said to a friend: 'Ties of karma in the three realms are caused by emotional form. When passion is about to end, the form should also be discarded. How could the path of the Medicine King be far from us?' He then took leave of the assembly, entered a firewood shrine, sat upright, recited the Chapter on the Medicine King, and lit a torch to burn himself. The assembly saw purple vapour rising into the sky. Within ten days, twin paulownia trees sprouted where he had resided; the discerning took this as an omen of the twin śāla trees.
In the fourth year of Daming, Empress Dowager Lu had an image of Samantabhadra made at Zhongxing Temple and held a vegetarian feast. Suddenly an unusual monk appeared at a seat. The assembly asked him in surprise; he replied: 'Huiming has come from Tian'an.' As soon as he spoke, he disappeared. Thereupon an imperial decree changed the name to Tian'an Temple. An edict appointed the śramaṇa Daowen as the Rectifier of Monks for the capital.
The śramaṇa Guṇarddhi from Western India arrived in Jingzhou and translated scriptures together with Xuanchang. Whenever [Guṇarddhi] stretched out his hand, fragrance was emitted and water flowed from his palm.
