In the second year, the Mahāsattva Baozhi travelled back and forth around Mount Wan (hu ban fan [pronounced wan], located in Quanzhou). Barefooted and wearing a brocade robe, he hung scissors, a ruler, a mirror, and a whisk at the end of his staff, carrying it as he walked. Children who saw him chattered and chased after him. Sometimes he asked for a little wine; sometimes he would not eat for many days. Once he met people eating fish sashimi and asked them for some; having eaten it, he vomited it into the water, and it all turned into live fish. From time to time he sang songs resembling prophetic verses.
Originally, a certain Mr. Zhu of Jinling heard a baby crying in an eagle's nest, took him, and raised him as his son. At age seven, he left the household under the monk Sengjian of Mount Zhong and devoted himself to the practice of dhyāna contemplation. The common people called him Master Zhi (Li Bai's eulogy says: 'The knife cuts, the ruler measures, the whisk sweeps away confusion and dust'—these were riddles).
