In the first year of Yongming, the Emperor established the Eightfold Precepts Retreat in Hualin Garden. When the Emperor was of humble status, he took refuge from trouble in the mountains of Jieyang, piling stones to make a stūpa; suddenly a tree grew beside it, shaped like an umbrella canopy. The Western Tianzhu śramaṇa Dharmamati arrived and translated the Devadatta Chapter. Sengyuan of Mount Zhong had resided in the mountains for fifty years, and the realm revered his lofty virtue. When he passed away, the Emperor sent a letter of consolation to his disciple Faxian, saying: 'I have learned of the impermanence of Upādhyāya Yuan. In the middle of the night, I had already sensed it in the dark. Upādhyāya Yuan's passing is truly auspicious. I await seeing the Dharma Master to recount this auspicious dream.' ('Upādhyāya Yuan' refers to Master Yuan.) An imperial edict appointed Xuanchang of Changgan Monastery along with Faxian as Saṅgha Masters, dividing responsibility for the affairs of the regions south and north of the Yangtze River. At the time they were called the 'Two Heroes in Black Robes.'
