In the second year, an imperial decree granted the śramaṇa Sengzhong an audience in Qianhe Hall; he referred to himself merely as 'This Poor Monk' (pindao). The Emperor asked Supervisor of the Department of State Affairs Wang Jian, 'How did ancient śramaṇas refer to themselves?' He replied, 'In the Han and Wei, this path had not yet flourished, and nothing has been handed down. Since the Jin and Song, they have mostly referred to themselves as 'This Poor Monk' and have been invited to sit. In the middle period of the Jin, Yu Bing and Huan Xuan wished to make them show full obeisance, but in the end this was never enforced.' The Emperor said, 'Even Masters Xian and Chang, whose conduct in the Dao is such as it is, still address themselves by their personal names. How much more so should others? While bowing down in obeisance is indeed not the established regulation, addressing oneself by one's personal name carries no offense either.'
