In the eighth year, the Emperor was indisposed and decreed that the śramaṇas pray to the Buddha and holy monks. On the seventh day, heavenly fragrance filled the palace, silhouettes of holy monks appeared within the hall, and golden tin staffs clattered. Soon after, he recovered. Xiao Zimao, Prince of Jin'an, was seven years old when his mother, Lady of Handsome Fairness Ruan, fell ill; they invited monks to practice the Way. Someone offered lotus blossoms to the Buddha, soaking them in a bronze jar. Weeping, the Prince bowed to the Buddha and said, 'If my mother can recover because of this, I pray that the flowers will not wither before the retreat ends.' When the seven-day retreat concluded, the flowers were even fresher and redder, and looking inside the jar, small roots had sprouted. His mother's illness was cured, and contemporaries praised his filial response.
