In the fourth year, Gao Kui (pronounced hui), the Prefect of Danyang, was walking past the Zhanghou Bridge at dawn when he saw five-colored light in the inlet. He sent men to grasp it, and they retrieved a golden statue, but it lacked a halo and pedestal. It was welcomed and enshrined at Changgan Monastery (located outside the city of Jiankang; changgan means 'long ridge'; the classic says, 'Embracing Gan and Yue,' meaning the land of Yue has many long ridges). A year later, a man from Linhai Commandery netted a bronze lotus pedestal bearing an inscription in Brāhmī script: 'Made by the fourth daughter of King Aśoka.' An imperial order directed it to be paired with the Changgan statue. Another forty years later, a pearl diver in Hepu retrieved a golden halo from the sea. An imperial order commanded it to be affixed to the statue, and it fit perfectly as if originally one.
